Getting Crabby
First, shop news…
Seems this week we have added a lot of hooks to the online shop. First, are the very popular Owner Stiner Treble Hooks. These heavy duty hooks are a popular replacement treble for anglers going after offshore species, or the biggest inshore species they can find.
The next few offerings are all from Mustad. First are the Mustad Ultra Point Kaiju Inline Single Hook, a nice single hook for those who want to replace the treble hooks on their lures.
A direct treble swap out would be the Mustad 3X Strong Treble Hook, perfect for when you don’t want to risk changing the action of a lure that is working, but need to replace a mangled or rusty hook.
Next up are the classic Mustad O'Shaughnessy Hook - Stainless Steel. These general purpose hooks are very popular for those who want to tie their own teasers.
Anyone who fishes for tautog knows the next hook. The Mustad Virginia Hook is a standard for blackfish rigs. We now have them in 100 packs, so you can tie your own blackfish rigs and be ready for the season.
How many times have you removed the double hook from a Mullet rig and misplaced it, or worse, dropped it in the sand and couldn’t find it. Now you can order those Mustad Double Hooks in packs of 100 to have on hand and never have that problem again.
Fishing in the surf remains good for fluke, with the surf still giving up some sizeable keepers. Bucktails and flavored soft plastics are doing the trick. We have also been hearing about some big, toothy critters in the surf, so don’t leave those rods unattended.
The spot fishing in the bay remains very good, and along with spot, there are some small croaker. Fishbites and sabiki rigs or spot rigs are all you need. There have been some big cow nose rays reported in the bay, so keep an eye on your rods here too. The local docks have been giving up some nice crabs. Bunker is the bait of choice for those.
Good news for those who fish the beach. As of 10:00 am on Thursday, July 10th, island Beach from A23 to the jetty has reopened to drive-on fishing access.
Some notable recent catches:
Our cover photo: Wondering if there are big blue crabs in our bay? Here is Amelia Thompson with proof. She stopped in with a monster 7 inch blue claw she caught Thursday on Grumpy Bunker. I bet you are going to think twice about wading barefoot in the bay…

John with a 20 inch, 2.65 pound fluke from the surf

Graig with a nice 4.10 pound fluke on Gulp!

Hudson Celentano with a beautiful 2.75 pound fluke he caught on mullet
Scott is still in Florida. He did manage to find his way out of the Everglades and has made an attempt at fishing. Of course, if you know Scott, he went out in his kayak. Unfortunately, he lost a piece of expensive equipment overboard. Scott was not happy, but the locals were entertained.
