Happy Memorial Day

Happy Memorial Day!  If you would all allow, we’d like to start today’s fishing report with a poem in honor of the holiday.

In Flanders Fields

BY JOHN MCCRAE

In Flanders fields the poppies blow

Between the crosses, row on row,

That mark our place; and in the sky

The larks, still bravely singing, fly

Scarce heard amid the guns below.

We are the Dead. Short days ago

We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow,

Loved and were loved, and now we lie,

        In Flanders fields.

Take up our quarrel with the foe:

To you from failing hands we throw

The torch; be yours to hold it high.

If ye break faith with us who die

We shall not sleep, though poppies grow

        In Flanders fields.

We’ll keep the rest of the report relatively short, as there isn’t too much to tell.  The weather has kept most fishermen off the water, and rightfully so.  Conditions were atrocious.  However, like our previous report predicted, Barnegat Bay was a savior for some people’s fishing weekend.

We received reports of bluefish from those fishing the shorelines of the bay during this storm.  Most were using surface plugs or SP minnows, but one angler who came in for new rigs said has was doing real well on bunker chunks not too far from the shop.

It’s looking like Island Beach State Park are reopening buggy access at 7:00 am today (5/31).  The wind is predicted to be NW and that should start knocking the surf down.  For those who want to give it a try, there will still be some swell so you will need 6 plus ounces to hold bottom.  We have plenty of fresh bunker and salted clams for those who want to give it a go.

It has been confirmed that the rematch of the Grumpys Kayak Fluke Grudge Match is taking place on Tuesday morning.  Ray is determined, and Scott is worried about losing his cardboard crown and title.  Below is a preview of the festivities.
