Merry Christmas From Grumpys Tackle

This is likely our last fishing report before Christmas, unless something incredible happens with the fishing between now and then.  We would like to take this time to wish all our loyal Grumpys customers a very Merry Christmas.  Our customers truly make Grumpys tackle what it is.

Just a reminder, our holiday hours are as follows:

  • Friday (Dec 24th) - 4:30 am to 11:00 am.
  • Saturday (Dec 25th) – Closed
  • Sunday (December 26th) and onward – 7:00 am to 7:00 pm

Our shipping department for the online store will be closed for the holiday weekend, starting today.  The online store remains open, but any orders placed between Thursday (Dec 23rd) and Monday (Dec 27th) will not be packed and shipped until Tuesday (Dec 28th).  If you need something before that date, we suggest you choose “In Store Pickup”, which will remain available through the weekend.

For those who are doing some very last-minute Christmas shopping, it’s too late to get anything shipped to you.  However, you can choose in-store pickup, or you can get an Online Gift Card.  They are good for anything in the Online Store and are delivered instantly via e-mail or txt.

In the shop we received a shipment of the popular Black Hole Challenger Bank rods, including the very popular 701L in spinning.  These are very versatile rods, as they can be used to jig for blackfish, cast lures for stripers, or jig for fluke (when that season rolls back around).  They pair well with a Shimano Stradic or Vanford 4000, of a Penn Battle III DX 4000

As far as the fishing, there is still a pretty good pick of striped bass in the surf.  They are not large by any means but when anglers find them, they put a bend in the rod.  Ava jigs with teasers are your best bet, but Tsunami sand eels and Bill Hurley Sand Eels are working too.

There is also a decent bite of fish in the back bay in select spots.  These stripers are also not monsters, but sizing down your tackle can make catching them fun.  Small swim shads like those from Tsunami or Storm have been the ticket here.

Our own Online Sales Manager John hit a back bay spot on his way home from work last night and was rewarded with three stripers from 17 inches to 24 inches.  Of course, he sends the picture of the smallest one.  They put up a good fight on his ODM DNA Back Bay Rod and Shimano Vanford 3000 reel

Ray had a visitor for Christmas. He said it jumped out of the tree and went after his nuts.  C’mon, get your head out of the gutter.  He had chestnuts roasting in the fire…
